Trail

Design of tablet device for blind people

/ Bachelor Thesis - Engineering Design - Technical University - Sofia /

There are nearly 39 million blind people worldwide, 1.5 million of which children.
Each day they use smart devices to communicate, work or simply browse.
Assistive technologies developed a lot recently and improved those experiences.
But screens are primarily meant to be consumed with sight.
And blind people depend on all other senses.

Trail invents a new tactile way of consuming visual content.

The device combines two display technologies Tactus and Senseg to bring dynamic convex forms with the feeling of texture.
Both technologies can be placed as thin layers over a standard OLED display.
Texture sensation gives the unsighted the ability to perceive visual art pieces.
The message is the medium.
With display area as big as A4 paper, a blind person can literally touch The Starry Night.
Trail can be incorporated in the educational system, making Braille learning easier.
It also provides an application ecosystem for software developers.
The opportunities are endless.

Trail has no analogues - it's innovative, smart and useful.
